WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment)

WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment)

From 1st July 2007, all retailers of electrical goods must comply with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) legislation. This is a scheme to prevent all such waste being disposed of in general landfill sites and to promote recycling of components and materials. The legislation aims to minimise the impact of electrical and electronic equipment on the environment by creating products with recycling in mind and encouraging reuse, recycling, and recovery of WEEE. Much of the UK's WEEE ends up in landfill, where the lead and other toxins it contains can cause soil and water contamination. This can have a harmful effect on natural habitat, wildlife and also human health. WEEE items are labeled with the below symbol.

WEEE

The definition of a WEEE product is one whose primary function is dependant on electrical currents to carry out the main function, e.g. a toaster. However, some products, such as a child's soft toy with an electric circuit, is not classed as WEEE as its primary function is a toy.

Computer components such as RAM, hard drives and graphics cards are NOT covered by WEEE. Items such as speakers and keyboards are WEEE items. If you are unsure about WEEE coverage on your item please contact us.

A take back service operates from Second Chance PC's offices, whether you purchase in-store or online. When you purchase a new (non-refurbished) item that is covered by WEEE from Second Chance PC you can exchange an old similar WEEE item (e.g. 1 keyboard for 1 keyboard or 2 speakers for 2 speakers) when purchasing an item or within 28 days of previously purchasing an item.

In order to take advantage of our WEEE take-back service you must be able to provide proof of purchase of a similar item on request.

For WEEE items purchased mail order, Second Chance PC will provide a pre-paid envelope on request for equivalent WEEE items to be returned to us for recycling/disposal. You may also bring them to us in person.

A WEEE covered item purchased from our store allows you to return a similar old WEEE item to us there.

You have 28 days from date of purchase to bring back the old item to us or to contact us for collection of the WEEE.

You may also take the item(s) to your local authority Civic Amenity Site if this is more convenient.

If you have any further questions regarding WEEE and how it applies to you and your item please contact us.
